Fire Crew

In August 2020, a series of lightning strikes ignited what became known as the SCU Lightning Complex Fire, one of the largest wildfires in California’s history. The massive fire complex burned approximately 393,624 acres, leaving a path of destruction across the landscape. During the fire, I spent time photographing a CAL FIRE crew that had been stationed in the Mount Hamilton mountain range. These firefighters worked under incredibly difficult conditions, surrounded by the devastation left behind by the flames. In addition to the photographs, I produced a video documenting the aftermath.
As you watch the video, try to imagine the blackened hillsides and barren landscapes as they once were, mountain after mountain covered with beautiful forests, trees, and thriving vegetation.
