Creating portraits using High Dynamic Range (HDR) photography presents some unique technical challenges. Traditional HDR imaging typically requires multiple exposures at different settings, making it difficult to capture spontaneous expressions and fleeting moments. To overcome this limitation, I developed my own system using a 3D camera rig, allowing me to capture the necessary images simultaneously. This opened up an entirely new approach to portraiture, making the sessions more spontaneous, expressive, and enjoyable.
Although there was never much commercial demand for this particular style of portraiture in advertising, the project became a fascinating creative experiment and a valuable learning experience. Sometimes, the most rewarding photographic explorations aren’t driven by a client’s needs, but simply by curiosity and the desire to discover what’s possible.
